This collection consists of letters written by John C. Ten Eyck between the years 1860 and 1875. They consist of business, legal and personal correspondence, as well as two letters of reference written by Senator Ten Eyck on another's behalf. Two letters written to the Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles, serve as letters of reference for John A. Burrough, who was interested in obtaining a Lieutenancy in the Marine Corps; and Thomas Potter, Esq., for whom Ten Eyck had written a recommendation for appointment to the position of Adjutant Paymaster in the Navy. Correspondents include: H.C. Carey, L.J. Cist, B. Perry, J.C. Rives, Charles Scott, Gideon Welles, and the editor of the Congressional Globe.

John Conover Ten Eyck (1814-1879) was elected in 1859 to serve as U.S. Senator from New Jersey. His service as Senator began on March 4, 1859 and ended March 3, 1865, at which time he was not reelected to office.
